A LITTLE KNOW-HOW

Microphone test

Tap Start microphone, allow access, and speak normally. The bars show your microphone’s input signal. Tap Record 5 seconds to make a short test clip, then press Play to hear it.

The microphone switches off when recording finishes. Tap Start again to repeat the test. The tool does not play your live microphone through your speakers, so there’s no live feedback loop.

Why is the meter quiet?

Check the microphone’s physical mute switch, your system’s selected input, and input volume. Speak a little closer. Some microphones and browsers automatically reduce background noise. A quiet signal alone doesn’t prove your microphone is broken.

How do I unblock microphone access?

Open this site’s permissions using the icon beside the browser address, allow microphone access, and retry. Your phone or computer’s system privacy settings may also need to allow the browser. Opening this page directly in Safari or Chrome can help if it is inside another app.

Which microphone does it test?

The tool uses the microphone selected by your browser or system. Its name appears below the meter when the browser provides one. To test a headset or another input, stop the tool, change your browser or system input setting, then start again.

Does this measure decibels or audio quality?

No. The meter shows a relative digital signal level, not calibrated sound pressure or an audio-quality score. Listen to the recording for clarity, hum, distortion, or dropouts. Input gain and browser audio processing affect the result.

What happens to my recording?

Microphone audio is processed in this page and is never uploaded by this tool. A recording is held only in page memory until you delete it, replace it, or leave. Switching away turns the microphone off and discards an unfinished recording; a completed clip remains available while the page stays open. Site analytics are described in our privacy policy.

Why can’t I record a clip?

Recording depends on your browser’s audio-recording support. If it isn’t available, the live input meter still works. Try a current version of Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge for playback testing.
